GPS vs A-GPS, working offline, jammers, drones, motorcycles, bikes and trucks: short answers to common questions about GPS trackers.
The short version: a GPS tracker works out its position from satellites without internet, and the mobile network is only needed to send that position to your phone or dashboard. A-GPS just speeds up the first fix. Jamming shows up as a sudden loss of signal, and alerts plus a backup beacon protect you against it. Below are plain answers to eight questions our customers often ask about GPS trackers.
1. A-GPS vs GPS: what is the difference
A GPS receiver calculates its position from satellite signals only. A-GPS (Assisted GPS) also downloads hints over the mobile network about where the satellites are in the sky. That is why it gets a fix faster, especially after a long stop or in a city between tall buildings.
| Feature | GPS | A-GPS |
|---|---|---|
| Data source | Satellites only | Satellites plus hints over the mobile network |
| Internet | Not needed | Needed to download hints |
| First fix | Slower | Faster |
| Works best | Open areas, highways, fields | Cities, start-up after a long idle period |
In practice you rarely have to choose: many modern vehicle trackers do both. They calculate the position from satellites and use A-GPS to start faster.
2. Does a GPS tracker work without internet
It can determine its position, yes, no internet needed for that. But it cannot show your car on a map on your phone without mobile data, which is why it carries a SIM card with a data plan.
If the vehicle drives somewhere with no coverage, such as a ravine or an underground car park, a good tracker stores positions in internal memory. When the signal returns, it uploads the whole track, so there is no gap in the history.
Devices that work fully offline include sat navs with offline maps and handheld hiking GPS units that record the track to memory.
3. How to detect a GPS jammer
A jammer drowns out satellite or mobile signals, so the tracker can no longer get or send a position. Typical signs:
- the signal drops suddenly while the car is parked in the open;
- several nearby devices lose connection at the same time;
- the track breaks off exactly when the car starts moving.
How to protect yourself:
- choose trackers with jamming detection that raise an alarm;
- set up connection-loss alerts in your tracking platform;
- hide a separate backup battery-powered GPS beacon: it transmits rarely, so it is harder to jam at the right moment.
4. Does a drone need GPS
Yes. Without satellite navigation a drone cannot:
- return to its take-off point on its own;
- hover steadily in the wind;
- log its flight path;
- respect no-fly zones.
For filming and precise flights, choose a drone that supports several satellite systems, such as GPS together with Galileo or BeiDou. The more satellites the receiver sees, the more accurately it holds position.
5. What is a GPS module and how is it different from a tracker
A GPS module is the “ear” for satellites: an antenna, receiver and processor that calculate coordinates. These modules sit inside smartphones, watches, cars, drones and bike computers.
A GPS tracker is a module plus a GSM modem, memory, sensor inputs and firmware tying it all together. A module only knows where it is. A tracker also tells you.
6. Which GPS tracker to choose for a motorcycle
A motorcycle lives outdoors, in rain and dust, and has little room for installation. So look for:
- Water and dust protectionof at least IP65.
- A backup batteryso the tracker keeps working if the bike battery is removed.
- Movement alarmand, if needed, engine immobilisation via a relay.
- Hidden mountingunder the seat or inside the fairing.
- An appthat shows the bike and sends alerts.
Suitable models are in our motorcycle GPS trackers section.
7. Why a cyclist needs a GPS tracker
A good bike can cost as much as a used car, and it takes a thief a minute to take it from a stairwell. A small tracker hidden in the frame or under the saddle helps you:
- see where the bike is if it has been stolen;
- get an alert when the bike moves without you;
- record routes and ride statistics.
A mini GPS tracker with its own battery suits a bicycle.
8. Why a GPS kit beats separate devices
A kit is a tracker, a SIM card, an antenna where needed and a configured dashboard or app. You get a ready solution that works right after installation.
- No need to hunt for a SIM card and plan yourself.
- All parts are compatible.
- Settings are done; you only install the tracker.
- One point of support if something goes wrong.
Kits suit fleets, couriers and private owners without technical experience alike. Options are in our ready-made tracking kits section.
Why fit a GPS tracker to a truck
For a haulier, a tracker is mostly about money and paperwork:
- fuel and route control: you see fuel theft, detours and idling;
- cargo security: alerts on unplanned stops and door openings;
- automatic reports for managers instead of phoning the driver;
- for trips to Poland, data delivery to the SENT and e-TOLL systems.
Trackers suited to tractor units and EU routes are in our GPS trackers for trucks section.
FAQ
How much does it cost to run a GPS tracker?
You pay for a SIM card and a tracking platform. Navi.zone Base starts from $9.90 per vehicle per year, and Navi.zone Pro costs 2,248 UAH per year for a package of up to three vehicles. Wialon Hosting costs 195 UAH per month or 899 UAH for six months.
Can I install a GPS tracker myself?
Yes, if it is a cigarette-lighter or OBD plug-in tracker: plug it in and it works. You can wire a hardwired tracker yourself too if you are confident with vehicle electrics. For hidden installation, fuel sensors or CAN bus connections, it is better to use a professional installer so the wiring is not damaged.
Can I track a person with a GPS tracker?
Only with their knowledge and consent, or for a child, by the parents’ decision. Covertly tracking another person is illegal in Ukraine under Articles 163 and 182 of the Criminal Code. For children and elderly relatives there are personal trackers with an SOS button that the person knows about and carries.
