A battery-powered GPS beacon runs on its own battery and reports its position over the mobile network. Modes, battery life and how to choose.
A battery-powered GPS beacon is a small tracker with its own battery. It works out its position from satellites and sends it over the mobile network to your app or web dashboard. It is not wired into the vehicle, so it is easy to hide, and it can run from a few weeks to several years, depending on the model and how often it reports.
Here is how a GPS beacon works, which modes it has, who actually needs one and how to choose a model.

What is a battery-powered GPS beacon
It is a tracker that does not need power from the vehicle. Inside there is a battery, a satellite receiver and a GSM module with a SIM card. If a thief disconnects the car battery or disables the factory alarm, the beacon keeps working.
The difference from a regular battery GPS tracker is that a beacon sleeps most of the time. It wakes up on a schedule or when it senses motion, sends a position and goes back to sleep. That is why the battery lasts so long.
How a battery-powered GPS beacon works
- Wakes up on a timer, from the built-in motion sensor or on your command.
- Gets a fix. The receiver picks up satellite signals and calculates where the vehicle is.
- Sends the data. The GSM module uploads the position to the tracking server.
- Goes back to sleep until the next session to save power.
You see the position on a map in the web dashboard or app. If the beacon detects movement or leaves a geofence, you get an alert.
GPS beacon operating modes
| Mode | How it works | Battery | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live tracking | Sends positions continuously or at short intervals | Drains fastest | Locating a vehicle after theft |
| Economy | Reports on a schedule, for example once a day | Lasts longest | Long-term protection of cars, trailers, machinery |
| Sleep with motion wake-up | Sleeps until the motion sensor detects movement | Lasts long | Equipment that stands still for weeks |
Most models let you switch modes remotely. A typical setup: the beacon runs in economy mode for months, and if the vehicle disappears, you switch to live tracking and follow where it goes.
Advantages of battery-powered beacons
- Easy installation. No wiring. The beacon goes into a hidden spot in the cabin, boot, body or frame.
- Independent of the vehicle battery.Cutting the power does not switch it off.
- Long battery life. From a few weeks in live mode to several years in economy mode. Check the exact figures in the specs of each model.
- Hard to find. There are no wires to follow, and it rarely transmits.
Where GPS beacons are used
Cars and motorcycles
A beacon is the second line of car theft protection. Say your SUV already has a wired tracker and a beacon is hidden separately. If thieves find and remove the tracker, the beacon keeps reporting. Motorcycles have little room for wired installation, so a beacon is often the main protection there.
Trailers, containers and cargo
Trailers and semi-trailers often sit in a yard with no power. A beacon shows where they are and alerts you if someone starts towing one away.
Machinery and valuable assets
A generator on a building site, a boat in winter storage, seasonal farm machinery: anything left unattended for long periods is worth protecting with a beacon.
Important. Fit a beacon only to your own property or with the owner’s written consent. Covertly tracking someone else’s vehicle or a person without their consent is illegal in Ukraine (Articles 163 and 182 of the Criminal Code).
How to choose a battery-powered GPS beacon
- Battery and runtimein the mode you actually plan to use.
- Operating modesand whether you can switch them remotely.
- Size and mounting:magnet, cable ties, a dust- and water-resistant case.
- Platform compatibilitywith Wialon or Navi.zone, so beacons and wired trackers live in one dashboard.
- Alertsfor movement, geofence exit and low battery.

FAQ
How long does a GPS beacon last on one charge?
Anywhere from a few days to several years, depending on the mode. In live tracking the battery drains in days or weeks. If the beacon reports once a day, it can run for years. Check the model specs for the figure that matches your own reporting schedule.
Does a GPS beacon need a SIM card?
Yes, without a SIM card the beacon cannot send its position. It gets the location from satellites but transmits it over the mobile network. An M2M SIM with a small data allowance is enough. It does not need call minutes or a large data plan, so there is no point paying for them.
Can someone find a beacon in the car?
They can, but it is much harder than finding a wired tracker. A beacon has no wires to follow and transmits only a few times a day. That is why it is used as backup protection that keeps working after the main tracker has been found and disconnected by a thief.
Beacon or wired tracker: which is better for a car?
For daily control of routes, mileage and stops, a wired tracker is the right tool because it reports all the time. For theft protection, a combination works more reliably: a wired tracker plus a separately hidden beacon. If one device is disabled, the other still shows where the car is.
