A step-by-step guide to connecting a GPS tracker to your phone, from the SIM card to alerts, and what to do if it doesn't appear.
To connect a GPS tracker to your phone, insert an active SIM card with mobile data into the tracker, power it on, install the app of a tracking platform such as Navi.zone or Wialon, and add the device by its IMEI. The tracker then sends its location to the server, and your phone shows it on a map. Professional trackers work this way: through a server, not directly with the phone.
What you need to connect a tracker
- The tracker and its IMEI.This 15-digit number is printed on the device or the box, and the platform uses it to identify the tracker.
- A SIM card with mobile data.A tracker uses little traffic, but the data plan must be active.
- Power.A vehicle tracker is wired to the vehicle, plugged into the OBD port or the cigarette lighter; a personal tracker is charged.
- An account on a tracking platformand the app on an Android or iOS smartphone.
How to connect a GPS tracker to your phone, step by step
Step 1. Prepare the SIM card
Check the balance and data plan, and turn off the PIN request: many trackers can't enter it themselves. Insert the SIM card while the tracker is off to avoid damaging the slot.
Step 2. Power on the tracker and wait for a signal
Connect power and watch the LEDs: usually one shows the mobile network and another shows satellites. The first time, put the car or tracker under open sky, because satellites can't be seen in a garage or underground car park. The first position fix can take a few minutes.
Step 3. Set the server address
The tracker has to know where to send data: the platform's server address and port. For Teltonika trackers this is done in the Configurator software over USB or with SMS commands. If you'd rather not deal with it, order GPS tracker setup and the device will arrive ready to use.
Step 4. Install the app and add the tracker
Download the Navi.zone or Wialon app from Google Play or the App Store and sign in. Add the device by its IMEI and give it a clear name, such as "Van AA1234" or "John Deere tractor". In Wialon Hosting the unit is usually created by your service provider, and you see it in your list right away.
Our Wialon vs Navi.zone comparison helps you choose a platform. In short, Navi.zone is simpler for a few vehicles, while Wialon is more flexible for a large fleet and detailed reports.
Step 5. Test it
Drive a few blocks and compare the track on the map with the real route. Check that the ignition status changes, mileage is counted correctly and alerts arrive in the app.
Step 6. Set up alerts and reports
- Geofences: a notification when the vehicle leaves the depot or arrives at a site.
- Events: ignition on at night, speeding, low battery voltage.
- Reports: trips, stops and mileage per day or month. A taxi driver gets a record of shifts, and a van owner sees where the fuel goes.
Ways to connect a tracker to a phone
| Method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Server and app | The tracker sends data to a server, and the phone shows it in the app | Car owners and fleets: history, reports, alerts |
| SMS commands | You send an SMS and get the coordinates back | A backup method or very basic trackers |
| Bluetooth tag | The phone sees the tag only when it is nearby | Keys and bags, not finding a car at a distance |
Why the tracker doesn't show up in the app
- The SIM card has no data, the plan has run out, or the PIN is on.
- The wrong IMEI was entered in the dashboard.
- The server address or port isn't set in the tracker.
- The tracker is indoors and can't see satellites.
- There is no power: a blown fuse or a flat battery in a personal tracker.

Who you may track
Track your own property, or people who know about the tracker and have agreed to it. Secretly tracking another person is illegal in Ukraine: it violates the privacy of personal life under Article 182 of the Criminal Code. If you put trackers in company vehicles, inform the drivers in writing.
FAQ
Can I connect a GPS tracker to my phone without an app?
Yes, but you get fewer features. Some trackers reply to SMS commands with their coordinates, and the Navi.zone or Wialon dashboard opens in your phone's browser. The app is more convenient because it shows the vehicle on a map, keeps the trip history and sends alerts as soon as something happens.
How much does a tracking service cost?
The price depends on the platform. Navi.zone Base starts at $9.90 per vehicle per year, and Navi.zone Pro costs 2,248 UAH per year for a package of up to three vehicles. Wialon Hosting costs 195 UAH per month or 899 UAH for six months. The SIM card is paid separately at your operator's rates.
Can I see several trackers on one phone?
Yes, all devices on one account appear in the same app. For example, the owner of a delivery service sees all five vans on the map at once and can check the route and stops for each one. You can also give colleagues, such as a dispatcher or an accountant, access with their own permissions.
How can I see the dashboard before buying?
Open our GPS tracking demo dashboard: it already has test vehicles with trips, stops and reports. You will see the map, alerts and reports before buying a tracker and understand which platform suits you better. If anything is unclear, give us a call and we will walk you through it.
