Short answer

How a GPS tracker helps recover a stolen e-scooter, run a rental fleet, and which type of tracker to choose.

An e-scooter GPS tracker shows where your scooter is right now and sends an alert if someone moves it without you. After a theft you see its location on a map and can pass it to the police, which noticeably improves your chances of getting it back. For rental and courier fleets the tracker also logs mileage and shows where and when each scooter was ridden.

How an e-scooter GPS tracker works

The tracker gets its position from satellites and sends it over the mobile network to a server. You see the scooter in an app or in the web dashboard of a tracking platform. Inside the device:

  • a GNSS receiverworks out the location;
  • a GSM module with a SIM cardsends the data;
  • a motion sensornotices when the scooter is moved or tilted;
  • a backup batterykeeps the tracker online even if a thief disconnects the scooter battery.

Why does an e-scooter need a GPS tracker

To get it back after a theft

You leave the scooter outside a shop, come back and it is gone. With a tracker you open the app and see where it was taken. Do not go and collect it yourself: give the coordinates and the route history to the police. It is safer for you and better for the case.

To know about a theft straight away

Set a geofence around your home or office, or turn on motion alerts. If the scooter moves at night or without you, your phone gets a message. A few minutes often decide whether you find it.

To manage a rental or delivery fleet

If you run a rental business or your couriers ride e-scooters, the tracker shows where each scooter is, how far it has gone and whether it has left the permitted area. That makes charging and servicing easier to plan and disputed rides easier to settle. See how it works on our GPS tracking for delivery page.

Where to see your scooter

If you own one scooter, a smartphone app is enough: a map, the day's route and alerts. For a fleet of ten or more scooters, a tracking platform such as Navi.zone or Wialon is more convenient. All scooters appear on one map, and reports show mileage, idle time and rides outside the permitted zone. Those reports are easy to share with a partner or an accountant.

How to choose a GPS tracker for a scooter

Tracker typePowerProsCons
HardwiredFrom the scooter batteryNo charging, reports all the timeNeeds wiring to the battery
Battery-poweredIts own batteryNo wires, easy to hideNeeds charging, reports less often

For your own scooter that is parked outside every day, a hardwired tracker is more practical. Scooter batteries run at higher voltage, so the tracker must support it: for example, the Teltonika FMB930 (90 V). If you would rather not touch the wiring, look at our battery-powered GPS trackers.

What else to check before you buy:

  • Size.The tracker should fit inside the deck or the steering column, out of sight.
  • Water protection.Scooters are ridden in rain and through puddles, so the case must keep moisture out.
  • Backup battery.It keeps the tracker online when the main battery is removed or flat.
  • Alerts.Movement, leaving a geofence, power cut: the more events the tracker reports, the sooner you know something is wrong.

How to install a GPS tracker on a scooter

  1. Pick a spot. Inside the deck or the steering column works well, away from eyes and water. If the tracker is visible, a thief will remove it first.
  2. Connect power. A hardwired tracker is connected to the battery through a fuse. If you are not confident with electrics, leave it to a technician: a mistake can damage the scooter controller.
  3. Test it. Open the dashboard and make sure the tracker is online and shows the right location.
  4. Set up alerts. Turn on motion alerts and a geofence around the place where the scooter is usually parked.

Remember to charge a battery-powered tracker: set a reminder on your phone or watch the charge level in the app.

FAQ

Does the tracker drain the scooter battery?

The tracker uses little power, and even less in sleep mode while the scooter is parked. If you ride every day, you will hardly notice any difference. If the scooter stands for weeks without charging, the tracker will slowly drain the battery, so charge it before long storage or set a longer reporting interval.

Does a scooter tracker need a SIM card?

Yes, the tracker sends its coordinates over the mobile network, so it needs a SIM card with a small data allowance. It uses very little traffic, so the cheapest plan for devices will do. Without a SIM card you cannot see the scooter on the map in real time, even if the tracker records the route.

What should I do if my scooter is stolen?

Open the app, check the current location and route, and contact the police straight away. Give them the coordinates, the time it went missing and a photo of the scooter. Do not try to recover it yourself, especially at night or in an unfamiliar place: your safety comes first, and police with exact coordinates act faster.

Can I put a tracker on my child's scooter?

Yes, a tracker can go on any scooter as long as it fits inside. But remember that you are tracking not only the scooter but also the child riding it. Tell them about the tracker openly, and with older children agree on the rules together so you do not damage their trust.
