How a GPS tracker with a microphone works, where it is genuinely useful and what limits Ukrainian law sets.
A GPS tracker with a microphone sends sound as well as location: a call to the owner's number, an SOS call or a conversation through a headset. You can legally use one to protect your own property, stay in touch with a driver, or help a person who carries the device and has agreed to it. Secretly listening to other people is a criminal offence in Ukraine.
How a GPS tracker with a microphone works
The tracker has three main parts. A GNSS receiver finds the position, a GSM modem with a SIM card sends it to the server, and a microphone with a speaker or a headset lets people talk. You see the location in the Navi.zone or Wialon app or web dashboard, and the voice link works like an ordinary phone call.
The voice connection usually starts with an event: someone presses the SOS button or calls the tracker's number. Check the specifications of each model, because features vary a lot between devices. Models with voice features are listed in our GPS trackers with microphone category.
What the microphone adds
- SOS call. The wearer presses a button, and the tracker sends its location and calls a preset number. A technician working alone on a site can call for help in a second.
- Two-way voice.A personal tracker works like a very simple phone: an elderly parent answers your call with one button.
- In-car headset. Some vehicle trackers support a Bluetooth headset, so a van driver can talk to the dispatcher without picking up a phone.
For day-to-day fleet tracking you usually don't need a microphone at all. Mileage, routes, stops and fuel use come from a standard tracker and sensors.
Is it legal to use a tracker with a microphone?
Yes, but only openly. A microphone touches on private life, so the rules are stricter than for ordinary GPS tracking.
- Secretly listening to conversations and collecting information about a person's private life without consent is prohibited by Articles 163 and 182 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
- Article 359 of the Criminal Code makes it an offence to illegally acquire, sell or use special technical means for covertly obtaining information.
- You may not track another person without their consent, even with a regular tracker that has no microphone.
A simple rule: install such a tracker only on your own property, and make sure the person using it knows about the device and agrees. Inform employees in writing, with a signature, before you start. If the situation is unclear, talk to a lawyer.

GPS tracker with microphone for a car
In your own car or a company van, the microphone is useful as a way to communicate. The driver presses SOS after an accident or a breakdown on the highway, and the dispatcher immediately sees where they are and can talk to them. This works well for long-haul drivers, delivery services and field crews.
You don't need a microphone to protect a car from theft. It is more important to get an alert when the engine starts at night or the car leaves a geofence, and to add a standalone beacon as a backup. We cover this step by step in our article on how to prevent car theft.
If employees drive the company vehicle, set out how voice features are used in an internal policy that drivers sign.
Mini GPS tracker with microphone
Compact personal trackers with an SOS button and a microphone are carried on a lanyard, in a pocket or on a belt. They suit people who know about the device and want to stay reachable: a security guard on a night shift, an elderly relative, a child on the way to school. For a child, it is an open way to stay in touch, not a hidden device.

One example of a personal model is the Teltonika TMT250 tracker with an SOS button. Check the specifications of the exact version for voice support before you buy.
Tracker with an external microphone
An external microphone is used when the tracker sits far from the driver, for example under a truck's dashboard. The microphone is mounted near the driver's seat so the driver and dispatcher can hear each other clearly. Have this kit installed by a service centre to reduce the risk of damaging the wiring.
When you can use a tracker with a microphone
| Situation | Allowed? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Your own car that only you drive | Yes | Nothing extra |
| Company van with a hired driver | Yes, openly | Written notice to the driver, internal policy |
| Personal tracker for a child | Yes | The child knows about it and wears it openly |
| Elderly relative or lone worker | Yes | The person's consent |
| Hidden in someone else's car or belongings to listen to them | No | This is a criminal offence |
How to choose a GPS tracker with a microphone
- Start with the use case. A vehicle tracker needs power from the vehicle and headset support; a personal one needs a battery and an SOS button.
- Check the voice modes: SOS call, incoming call, Bluetooth headset.
- Make sure the tracker works with Navi.zone or Wialon so you see tracks, reports and alerts in one dashboard.
- For personal models, compare battery life and dust and water protection.
FAQ
Is it legal to put a tracker with a microphone in my own car?
Yes, if the car is yours and it is used by you or by people who know about the device and have agreed. Secretly listening to other people's conversations is prohibited by Articles 163 and 182 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. If employees drive the car, inform them in writing before you start.
Can I listen to drivers of company vehicles?
Only openly and under rules the drivers know. Tell them in writing what the device can do, and set out how it is used in an internal policy they sign. To manage the work, a GPS track, stop reports and fuel sensors are usually enough, so you often don't need audio at all.
Do I need a microphone to protect a car from theft?
No, a microphone does not help much against theft. Alerts for engine start and geofence exits, an immobiliser and a backup standalone beacon that works independently of the main tracker are far more useful. If the car is stolen anyway, give the coordinates from your dashboard to the police.
Which trackers have a microphone?
Microphones are most common in personal trackers with an SOS button and in some vehicle models with headset support. Features depend on the exact version, so compare the specifications before buying. If you are not sure, call us at +380 67 466 43 23 and we will help you pick a model for your task.
